Introduction - Science & Research

Albert Einstein wrote in a letter to Max Born on December 4th, 1926 affirming his displeasure with the idea of quantum mechanics and this intelligent force which lay at the very core of their research “At any rate, I am convinced that He (God) does not play dice.”  This is also quoted as “God does not play dice with the world / universe”.

In reply to Einstein, Niels Bohr wrote “Who are you to tell God what to do?” also quoted as “Albert, don’t tell God what to do.”

What is it that all these great physicists are talking about?  What did they find?  Through this section I hope to bring you to an understanding - or rather lack thereof.  In quantum physics the act of understanding means that you actually have not understood at all!  Confused?  They are too.  Wave particle duality and quantum entanglement has baffled physicists since 1900 and although they still remain confused they are only now embarking on possible ways to harness this information and put it into applications.

A Little History to Open

Science as we define it today has been around since Newton in the 1600s however science has been widely known for tens of thousands of years. Sir Isaac Newton would have loved to have proven religious principles through science however he lived in a time when Galileo was tortured by the Inquisition, in Rome, for heresy for saying that the Sun lies motionless at the center of the universe. Newton however did step out and daringly used the falling apple to support the theory of the earth turning round creating gravity. For more than 200 years Newtons theories were the core of the scientific era and founded what we know as classical physics. This physics works very well for explaining large-scale visible things like apples falling from trees, planets orbits and also helped put man on the moon. However during the 20th century Newtons laws no longer could be applied as scientists delved deep into the world of the atom, the birth of stars, subatomic world or how particles behaved. A new science was developed: quantum physics.

The separate universe which Newtonian theory implied is being brought down. Regrettably you will not be hearing it on the news. If you are interested you will need to search it out for it yourselves. The last 90 years of research has brought about a new physics whose conclusion is inescapable: everything in our world is connected to everything else. This means that we are not limited by skin and hair with research showing that we can use this connected consciously to tap into the same power that drives the entire universe. Everything from searching for romance and healing our loved ones to the fulfillment of our deepest aspirations, we are integral part of all that we experience each day. The catch? Our power will lie dormant until we awaken it. We need to change the way we perceive the world and move away from our “modern” world which society has formed.

Quantum Weirdness (alias Quantum Physics)

Physics and mathematics intermingle and coexist. As new approaches to reality generate more tests and experiments the physicists and math geniuses continually find things which do not match the models. What do they do? They just create more equations and more theories. So they either fudge the data or create new equations to match their experimental results. Quantum physicist Richard Feynman called it “dippy hocus-pocus”. The mathematicians call it “renormalization”. If the results of the equation don’t balance out on both sides or the real life results don’t make sense, scientist just take one part and cancel out the other part. Eureka! I will attempt to outline the core of quantum weirdness in the section The Observer Effect, Particle Wave Duality and the Electron.

Thought Experiments

When asked by a mother what kind of reading she should do to prepare her son to be a scientist Albert Einstein replied “Fairy tales and more fairy tales – the creative imagination is the essential element of a true scientist, and fairy tales are the childhood stimulus to this quality.”

Einstein used his imagination and his “thought experiments” to develop his ideas and concepts for his famous theories.  In one experiment he visualized what it would be like to ride on a beam of light, imagining what it would look like as he sped past a stationary object at such a speed.  He looked back at earth and saw that the light bent.  This sounds crazy, but it is the experiment he performed in his imagination, which he then back-engineered mathematically into a series of equations that would come to be known as the theory of relativity.  The important thing to note here is that he had the experience, or the journey (to use a shamanic term) and then he created the equation that explained what he found out; he made it up.  Niels Bohr also used “thought experiments” all the time and rarely even took notes.

Many scientific discoveries have occurred as the result of a visionary experience or the flash of an intuitive insight.  Nokola Tesla’s father was sure his son would follow in his footsteps by taking over the family business.  One day young Nicola became very ill with a high fever and he was not expected to survive.  Nikola said to his father that if by some chance he survived, he would not take over the family business but would instead go to school to become an engineer.  Tesla dreamed one day of harnessing the tremendous power of Niagara Falls by converting it into usable electrical energy.  One of the many things that he invented was something now called a Tesla coil.  This coil allowed for the conversion of energy derived from rushing water, via a water-powered turbine, into electrical power.  Tesla was employed by Thomas Edison after engineering school.  One day, while feeding pigeons in the park at twilight, Tesla had a vision of a vast oscillating universe that was made up of frequencies of energy.  He developed one of these frequencies that he experienced in this mystical state, harnessing the one that vibrated at 60 cycles per second.  Even though Edison’s name and his company, General Electric, are typically associated with electricity, it was actually Tesla who harnessed alternating current to power our world.

Benzene Ring was discovered by German chemist F. A. Kekulé and to use his own words:

“I turned my chair towards the fireplace and sank into a doze.  Again, the atoms that I had been pondering about were flitting before my eyes.  Smaller groups now kept modestly in the background.  My mind’s eye, sharpened by repeated visions of a similar sort, now distinguished larger structures of varying forms.   Long rows frequently rose together, all in movement, winding and turning like serpents: and see!  What was that?  One of the serpents seized its own tail and the form whirled mockingly before my eyes.  I came awake like a flash of lightning.  This time I spent the remainder of the night working out the consequences of the hypothesis.”

In other words, he went into an altered state, viewed an answer to what had been puzzling him, and upon returning to waking consensus reality spent the rest of the night making his chemical structure or equation conform to his flash of intuitive insight.  He made it up!

Many of the scientific discoveries and theories that we now consider to comprise the bedrock of scientific thought are the result of the dreams, visions, or altered states of geniuses. 

The Mind and The Field of Information

Monkeys were being studied to understand group behavior and how it is learned in islands in the Indian Ocean. The researches managed to teach, through example, how to wash a potato in the ocean before eating it and wondered how this cleaning technique would be passed on.

Over time, this one monkey had the whole community washing their dirty potatoes in the ocean before eating them. What was even more intriguing though was when the researchers visited other islands in the area. Without any demonstration or connection to the monkey(s) on the original islands all the monkeys were washing their potatoes in the ocean.

Another study which found similar results was carried out with rats and a maze.  At the center of the maze was the reward: food.  In the laboratory researchers had set up the exact same maze for generations of rats of the same lineage to go through to retrieve their food.  The rats would progressively find their way through the maze in a shorter time as the generations progressed until they were born actually knowing the route.  New young rats did not follow adult rats through the maze, they just knew their way.  At this point the researchers had an exact replica of the maze produced and set up in another laboratory to see how long it would take their rats to go through the maze for the food.  The results were equally astonishing.  The rats in a completely different location from a different lineage found their way through the maze with ease.

In his book “A New Science of Life”, first published in 1981, Rupert Sheldrake coined the terms morphic field and morphic resonance. Resonance on a morphic level is “the influence of previous structures of activity on subsequent similar structures of activity organized by morphic fields.  Through morphic resonance, formative causal influences pass through or across both space and time, and these influences are assume not to fall off with distance in space or time, but to come only from the past.  The greater the degree of similarity, the greater the influence of morphic resonance.”  This resonance refers to what Sheldrake thinks is “the basis of memory in nature …. the idea of mysterious telepathy-type interconnections between organisms and of collective memories within species.”  Morphic fields includes morphiogenetic, behavioral, social, cultural, and mental fields.  Morphic fields are shaped and stabilized by morphic resonance from previous similar morphic units, eg strategies for scaling a rock surface will go into a mountain climbing morphic field all on its own or selecting ripe fruit from a tree will go into the fruit farming morphic field.  Each of us and our ancestors are collecting knowledge for us and putting it into the various morphic fields and we each have the ability to tap into that information as we learn tasks as a whole, we progress.

In the 1920’s a rather barbaric set of experiments on the brain of rats was carried out by Karl Lashley whose research spanned another 30 years.  As a keen scientists he was on the track of discovering where memories existed and he built a jumping stand for rats where they learned to jump through miniature doors to reach food.  After learning the route Lashley systematically went about removing pieces of the brain to discover where the memory was.  His work was extremely crude and diabolical by any standard so I will skip over the details and keep to the results.  The rats, some partially paralyzed or with impaired motor skills, always made it through the purpose built jumping stand and always remembered the routine.  Regardless of whether the rats’ brains had been fried, cut apart or mushed up.  The memory itself was not in the brain.

Since Lashley there has been a fabulous array of scientist in search for the memory.  Scientist who followed Lasley were progressively Karl Pribram, Stuart Hameroff and Fritz-Albert Popp. 

Pribram theorizes that our brain primarily talks to itself and to the rest of the body not with words or images, or even bits or chemical impulses, but in a language of wave interference: the language of phase, amplitude and frequency.  We perceive an object by resonating with it, getting in synch with it.  To know the world is literally to be on its wavelength.  After seeing something the brain processes this information in wave-frequency patterns and scatters these throughout the brain in a distributed network.  Storing memory in wave interference patterns is remarkably efficient and would account for the vastness of the human memory.  Waves hold unimaginable quantities of data.  It has been said that using this holographic wave-interference pattern, that virtually every book ever published in English would fit onto a large sugar cube!  This model also accounts for our instant recall of memory.

Every neuron of the brain has been found to log on at the same time and speak to every other neuron simultaneously.  A process called “superradiance” allows for coherent signals to pulse through the entire body instantaneously.  This collective communication throughout the entire body accounts for the unity of thought and consciousness.  Consciousness is a global phenomenon which occurs everywhere in the body, and not simply our brains.  Consciousness, at its most basic, is coherent light.

If all the research is correct, our brain is not a storage medium but a receiver in every sense.  The brain receives old information in the same way it processes new information – through wave interference patterns.  Whatever the reception mechanism Lashley left of the brain in the rats, they were still able to make it through the run in its entirety because the memory of it was never burned away in the first place, it was never in there.  Some scientists go so far as to suggest that all of our higher cognitive processes result from an interaction with the Zero Point Field.  For scientists there is no such thing as nothingness.  We may perceive emptiness between ourselves and the clouds but there is no such thing for scientist – we are surrounded by information, energy, photons, waves, particles there is no nothingness anywhere, everything is everywhere.  We are surrounded by an enormous field of information.

Distance! What Distance? There is Action at any Distance.

In the 1990’s the U.S. Army were investigating whether or not the power of our feelings continues to have an effect on living cells, specifically DNA, once those cells are removed.  The researches retrieved white blood cells from a donor and placed them in a specifically designed chamber where they measured them electrically to see if it responded to the emotions of the person who had donated the cells.  The donor happened to be a war veteran, a pilot.  He had witnessed firsthand dogfights and lost friends and colleagues during air battles.  The veteran was in a room several hundred feet away from his cells and shown a series of video images designed to create genuine emotion.  The footage ranged from graphic wartime footage to erotic images to comedy.  While the donor experienced emotional peaks and dips, his cells and DNA showed a powerful electrical response at the exact same instant in time.  The army stopped this experiment when the donor and the cells were separately by only hundreds of feet.  However, the researcher who had designed the experiment, Dr Cleve Backster continued with his team their investigations.  A span of 565km (350miles) separated the donor and his cells.  Gauged by an atomic clock located in Colorado, the interval measured between the emotion and the cell’s response was zero. The effect was simultaneous.  This might sound absurb but remember that on a quantum level there is a field which exists and connects all matter.  Dr Cleve Backster believes “There is no place where one’s body actually ends and no place where it begins.”

This experiment suggests a couple of things: a form of energy exists between living tissues; cells and DNA communicate through this field of energy; human emotion has direct influence on living DNA; distance appears to be of no consequence.

“Action at a distance” is a well-known phenomenon in quantum physics.  One experiment for this is using when a particle is taken and is then split in 2 with each part sent off in opposing directions.  One particle passes a magnetic field which forces the direction of spin in that particle to change.  At exactly the same time the other half changes (regardless of distance) simultaneously to match exactly the direction and speed of spin.  Action at a distance is always simultaneous at the quantum level.

The Observer Effect, Particle Wave Duality and the Electron

What they taught us in school is not how it really is.  What is this reality that we find ourselves in?  Modern physics says it is just waves of information.  Everything is just light and information.
The grand-daddy of all quantum weirdness-ness is the two-slit experiment which was first put together in the 1920’s in an attempt to find out if light is a particle or a wave.  
To understand this experiment we first have to understand how particles, little balls of matter, act.  If we randomly shoot a particle at a screen with a slit, we will see a pattern on the back wall where they went thru the slit and hit.
So if you So if you add in a second slit you would expect to see a second band of to the side of the original band. That is how particles would react.
Now, let’s look at waves.  The waves hit the slit and radiates out striking the back wall with the most intensity directly in line with the slit.  The line of brightness on the back wall shows that intensity.  This is similar to the line the particles make.
But, when you add a second slit something different happens.  If the top of one wave meets the bottom of another wave they cancel each other out.  Now there is an interference pattern on the back wall.  The places where the 2 tops meet are the highest intensity, the bright lines.  The places where the bottoms meet, they cancel each other out so there is nothing.  
When we throw things that are matter through 2 slits we get 2 bands of light which indicate particles while with waves we get an interference pattern of many bands.
Now, let’s look at what happened with our famous two slit experiment which has flummoxed physicists for nearly a hundred years.....
An electron is a tiny tiny bit of matter.  The scientists in 1920’s fired a stream of electrons through a single slit and they behaved like a particle would be expected to.  They then fired the stream of electrons through two slits and they got two lines.  Great, just what they expected, until they left the room…..  When they left the room the electrons acted like a wave and a particle, they got an interference pattern and bands.  But again, when they were in the room, the electrons acted like particles and produced two strips.
The electrons, the tiny bits of matter, produced a pattern like waves.  How?  How could pieces of matter create an interference pattern like a wave?   It didn't make sense.  The physicists thought that perhaps the little balls of electrons are bouncing off each other and creating that pattern so they decide to shoot electrons through one at a time.   
There is no way they could interfere with each other but after an hour of this the same interference pattern shows up.
The conclusion was inescapable!  Or so they believed!!  The single electron leaves as a particle, becomes a wave of potentials, goes through both slits, and interferes with itself to hit the wall as a particle.  Eureka !!   
But mathematically it’s even stranger…. Mathematically it goes through both slits; and it goes thru neither; and it goes through just one; and it goes through just the other.  All of these possibilities are in super position with each other.  
But physicists were still completely baffled by this and wanted to refine the test even further.  So, they decided to peak and actually see which slit it went through.  They put a measuring device by one slit to see which one it went through and, then, once again let the particles fly. One by one. 
But the quantum world is far more complex than this.  When they observed the electron it went back to behaving like a particle and produced two bands, not an interference pattern of many.  The very act of measuring or observing which slit it would go through meant it only went through one and not both. The electron decided to act differently as though it was aware it was being watched.  
It was from here that the physicists stepped forever into the strange world of quantum events. 
What is matter?  Particles or waves?  Waves of what?  What does an observer have to do with of this?  The observer collapses the wave function simply be its observation.
Our most revered physicists are still trying to figure out whether matter is a particle or a wave.
In the following experiment conducted as recently as 2005, Jean-Francois Roch et al at the Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan set up the experiment in a contained environment.  They released a single particle and had 2 different end parts.  The first was intended to observe particle behavior.  If it was a particle it would go down either D1 or D2 or it would be a wave and be found in both D1 and D2.  The second end section had a CCD camera which would observe wave like behavior.  
The result was as frustrating as ever.  When the end was to observe particle behavior there was only ever a single particle observable in either D1 or D2.  When the end was the CCD camera the matter proved that it was a wave.
Nils Bohr’s answer to how the results were determined was that one must first choose which answer you wish, the two experiments are incompatible.  Both experiments are correct.  The two questions cannot be asked simultaneously.  
Confused?  So are they.  
Wheeler decided to go further.  In Wheeler’s delayed experiment a contained unit was purpose built at 50 meters in length.  A single particle is released and only after it was released the choice for the end section was determined by a random noise generator.  What do you think happened? 
The particle was milling along (as they do), catapulted into a container (all on its own), floated down the 50 meter tube, observed the end put in place all of a sudden, got really rather excited at the challenge placed before it and became either a particle or wave with due considering (and respect) for what was expected of it.   
The particle has never been out done.  It is always a particle when given the environment to act as a particle and always a wave for a wave.  When given neither it acts as both a particle and a wave.  
Ultimately it is the observer who decides what it shall become.
The Electron
At school we are all told the story of how electrons float around the nucleus in various ring formations.  The electron is a teeny tiny dot like something floating around the nucleus.  Today, we have achieved the magnification sufficient to actually see the electron.  When the electron is photographed under the supervision of a scientist it conducts itself in strict accordance with the perception: it is a tiny spec like something floating around the nucleus.  Now, when the scientists are not there and photographs are taken the picture is quite different.  A cloud is observed around the nucleus, no specs of possible electrons are apparent.  Just a cloud.  Huh!  
Our revered scientist have deduced that the cloud represents every possible location for the electron to sit and only when the observer comes along does it collapse the wave function into the one possibility.  The observer changes the very make-up, positioning and action of the "electron" just by observing it.  
The means to observe the nucleus is not with us yet so we really do not know if there is a proton and neutron inside it.  The scientist just believe that it must be held together by positive and negatively charged particles.  I’m looking forward to seeing what images can be retrieved when we do have the ability to delve into the depths of the nucleus.  I’m certain they will prove to have equally excitingly confusing and conflicting results.
In Conclusion (or rather lack of conclusion)
As we delve deeper to the core of everything in our universe we find that even the photons and electrons change and react to our observation and belief of them.  The particles will change as we command them.  When left to themselves they play and are everything.  When observed our perception of what they should be changes them into just that.  For over 100 years the most extraordinary minds of our world remain without answers to the very foundation of quantum weirdness:
- Is every individual part that makes our universe self-intelligent?  Whatever challenge the scientists set up the universe is always eager to reply “Yes please, I’ll play too”.  
- Is it a single intelligence?
- Is it simply a force that acts out what we command?
- What does that mean for every pharmacological experiment ever made?  After all the placebo compared to even aspirin is being found to be as effective as the aspirin itself – I’ll take the placebo.

As our observation affects everything to its core how you see your desk, computer or plants has impact.  Let’s not forget the people, animals and every living thing whether in our immediate vicinity or in the next universe.  The most important observer effect we must selfishly conclude must be that of the observation of ourselves.  Defining and refining a negative conclusion about ourselves or anything can only have catastrophic consequences as we collapse the wave function of all possibilities into one.
